Vybez Awards 2015 (19th December)

This year's Vybez Awards comes in December 19th,  in a few days time,  the Kisumu arts award event will be going down at #Tuffoam mall #Kisumu.  Celebrated artists will be awarded.  Voting ended on the 8th of December.
This time the voting process was electronic and one was required to vote at least once in a day for his/her favorite artists falling within different award categories.

Vybez awards 2015 has incorporated, Kakamega and Nakuru unlike other years that they have been awarding artists from Kisumu and its environs this time they have decided to expand their borders. With Amileena coming on board to mentor the artists, they have confidence that in this year’s event they will produce the best from western Kenya with quality music. Since the first vybez awards in 2012, the competition in music industry has gone a note higher.

This year’s red carpet event will be graced by so many dignitaries within our country. The event being hosted at Tuffoam mall, there are some new categories that have been introduced this year, with the primary intention of supporting our society alongside the artists. Kisumu as a whole has over 300 artists and Vybez is only giving 40% and the remaining 60% is on individuals’ effort.

#200KForOballa

Kisumu has a quiet calm and charm not common in other cities in Kenya. The ambiance of the tree-lined avenues of the posh Milimani estate bordering Lake Victoria gives one a refreshing feeling.
But in recent times, when night falls in parts of the city that has historically enjoyed relative security, the silence is shattered by screams and gunshots. Somewhere, someone would be at the receiving end of a razor-sharp machete brandished by a hardened criminal.
In the past decade, the lakeside city has experienced an unprecedented economic boom, characterised by heavy investment in real estate, hotels, entertainment joints and retail outlets. But this boom has brought with it brutal thugs who lurk in the shadows to kill, maim and steal.
The most dreaded of all is ‘42 Brothers,’ a gang whose very name sends shivers down the spines because they rape, rob, shoot and slash their victims with unbridled ruthlessness.
Armed with guns and machetes, 42 Brothers are said to operate in groups of 10 or more, terrorizing residents with such impunity that they lurk at the scene of attacks fearlessly and saunter away with ease and on foot.
It has been weeks since the insecurity status of Kisumu caught up with the Founder, Patron & Mentor of Manyatta Youth Resource Center – ANTHONY OBALLAH. He was attacked by unknown gang & left for the dead by the road side, but through God’s grace he survived the ordeal though still in pain. This selfless man mentors talented youth from Kisumu slums. ~Nancy Okutah
Oballah is supposed to go for surgery on 20th November, and KSh200,000 is needed to cater for the medical expenses.
“The thugs just hit me from the back and I lost consciousness,” said Oballa.
So severe was the attack that it left him with deep cuts on the head and eye. Unfortunately, he is yet to undergo surgery due to lack of funds.
Just 200K for Oballa. We can do this, just 100 shillings can go a long way to help him recover. Says Jael Lieta in a Facebook update.
To donate, please use this account information, to help give Oballa another shot at life to continue supporting his students.
Kindly join this noble cause to help restore his health back.
Contribute & SHARE Widely.
Thanks!

TEACHING LESS PRIVILEGED KIDS HOW TO USE COMPUTER IN KENYA

The statistics

Over the next 10 years it is estimated that there will be 1.4 million jobs in IT and computer sciences, and only around 400,000 graduates qualified to do them.  This catchy statistic made me smile at myself and thump my chest Saying, “What a smart person I was to be in the IT related profession”. We are living in an age of unparalleled digital disruption, with massive amounts of technology-driven change, huge innovation, and significant evolution in the ways people use technology.

According to The Global Information Technology Report 2015, over 12 billion devices are connected to the Internet, and that number is expected to increase to over 20 billion by 2020. These connections provide more data for better decision-making and improve the way governments, businesses, and individuals operate.  I count myself lucky to be in this generation of techies witnessing the digital disruption and being part and parcel of it.

The nostalgia

Yes I am excited and lucky, so I count myself. My first interaction with an electronic device was when I was seven years old. Feel free to guess what it was and how thrilled I was. It was a neighbor’s radio jukebox .The question which flooded my mind was: “How did those singing guys get inside that small box?” The second device was Gameboy, then I graduated to brick game. My biggest question was how does this thing work?  where do the bricks come from? Why can’t they come out? Few times I opened inside to see if I could see the bricks. To my surprise there were only wires and circuit boards. I thought radio would be different, but to my surprise, same things (wires and all) filled all these machines. Of course, the radio was different because its inside was also filled with pregnant cockroaches breeding inside.

Simbi and Alego primary school pupils at WespeakCodeKE event in Homabay  County
As the curiosity grew, I started repairing my friend’s radios, with reference of course to the working ones, and it was trial and error and copying the arrangement of different components within the circuits. I was born in town so I count myself lucky.  Probably by now I know you are wondering, “why the narrative?”.  Well, wonder no more.

THE NEW KISUMU CITY DEVELOPMENT BLUEPRINT

Kisumu County’s Governor Jack Ranguma last Friday unveiled an economic blueprint dubbed #TransformKisumu that is set to transform Kisumu city to a world class city. The blueprint is the product of a Cabinet Paper prepared in July, taking cognisance of the fact that real economic growth of Kisumu County during the last decade has been insufficient and unemployment as well has been endemic. Speaking at MV Uhuru Pier on Friday night on the Lake Victoria shores, Ranguma said implementation of the blueprint begins from the Financial Year 2015/2016.

We want to place Kisumu on the world map and compare ourselves not with other county headquarters but with established cities like Cape Town and Cairo,” he said.

Kisumu Beautician and Coder

So I am about to post this story then an article I read a year ago on how programming can help fight poverty came to mind. So I googled it and, as it turns out, today is the 1st anniversary of that article! What a cool way to begin a LakeHub Story? You will find that link at the end of this article.
Enter Musa Wagole. A programmer currently working on a web application that would help keep track of stock at boutiques. At a glance, he seems like your everyday techie waiting to pounce on and develop solutions around a challenge. Not until you hear his full story.
Musa learned about LakeHub about a year ago, when one of this friends suggested that he could tag along to a techie’s meet-up at a local restaurant, Hotel Salazar. Those days we did not have a space yet, and it is in spaces such as coffee houses we met to network and build our skills. It is one such day that he decided to join  the community at LakeHub. And liked it instantly.
Musa with one of his clients.
Musa in the streets,  getting his hands dirty with nail polish. He charges 50 shillings (0.5USD) for a pedicure.
But you see, Musa is a street beautician. He makes ladies look good. Manicuring and pedicuring is his kind of thing.

Can Kisumu City Replicate Africa’s Silicon Savannah?

While Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, is considered the epicenter of Africa's digital entrepreneurship industry, the little known, lakeside town of Kisumu is the latest force in attracting some of the country's most innovative minds.

The city's most recent accomplishment was landing the Lake Hub, which officially launched in March this year at Harvey’s building on Oginga Odinga street. More importantly, Lake Hub is the first and currently the only one out of 15+ start-up tech hubs in Kenya with a physical presence outside the capital. Startups like MobiDawa, a drug adherence mobile app; e-Kodi, a house hunting platform; and Sokonect, an agricultural produce listing platform are among the digital enterprises bootstrapping their way to sustainability at the hub.

Flaunting itself as an innovation lab, business incubator and co-working space all at once, Lake Hub places a great emphasis on venture capital funding opportunities, events, networking, mentorship, and training opportunities tailored to the particular demographic it serves – Western Kenya based entrepreneurs.

Top 5 Performing Artists to watch in Western Kenya

Kisumu is untamed land of opportunities, with myriads of untapped resources, the primary resource being art, culture and Natural resources such as Lake Victoria and the conducive climatic condition among others. Kisumu County is characterized by a rapid growing population, high population density, water scarcity, falling food production, and low resilience to climate change. Located along the shores of Lake Victoria in western Kenya, Kisumu County is home to 952,645 people. The population is projected to grow to 1,145,749 by 2017, according to population dynamics, environment, and sustainable development in Kisumu county report by Population Action International. Apparently the question in your mind is how is all these related to the above a title. Well, the catch is, three quarters of the population is under 30 years old so basically it is a youthful City. There you have it!
Over the years the art space in the region has been under-utilized with many Kisumu-based artists leaving Kisumu for Nairobi. Kisumu boasts of performing Artist  big names such as Susan Owiyo, Eric Omondi and his Brother Fred Omondi, Cleopas AWINJA (Jalas), Otoyo  ,Big Pin just to mention a few. I have to confess that several art related companies and Artist associations have come up, to put to use this space in Kisumu and western Kenya as a whole, Kisumu being the epicenter for Art in the region, and western Kenya the headquarter.
Ok now let’s get back to the purpose of this article, top 10 upcoming artists to watch in western Kenya. Probably I know you’re wondering why they are upcoming yet some of them have been in the music industry for over five years   and they have hit that 10,000 hours expert mark.
This list is in order as sorted by my blogging team.

1. Tomito AKA Ngozi Nyeusi
Right is Ngozi Nyeusi and Fololo
He is a crowd puller, with vigor and passion. He articulates his rhymes; his grip in poetry is just moving. He is born and bred in Kisumu.  Started music in 1995 in Kisumu, so when we talk of experience he is counted in. He was in the group called kenyanna, hardcore rap trio from then to 2006. One member of the group, the late Peter Okongoo, was shot dead in Eastleigh Nairobi), and the other member, Dan Odhiambo, later in 2007 migrated to the USA prompting him to take a small break from music to strategize and repackage .

In 2011 one Tomito got a courtesy call from several studios but settled for Ogopa deejays. Tomito is currently working on his solo album with the stable. He has already done three videos;  Kiongozi wa Upinzani , Pesa featuring Kimya and seven audios with Ogopa Deejeys . He toured Europe in 2008 with his former group member Kenyanna. He had performed in Amsterdam, Hamburg, Berlin, Dublin and some countries in Africa including Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi just to mention a few. His Album is to be completed this year November by Ogopa deejays. Tobito is currently anticipating the release of his new video featuring Willy Fololo, called “maumau”.

LAKEHUB – tech and innovation in Kisumu

post by:
Making the space more colorful
After leaving Oyugis I spent a week in Kisumu continuing my work with LOOP doing lots of networking and research on design, technology, and innovation in Western Kenya. As the third largest city in Kenya, Kisumu is a sharp contrast from the hustle and bustle of Nairobi. Its a relaxed and calm city, in comparison to Nairobi, right on Lake Victoria with several beautiful parks. I always felt very safe and comfortable, and its easy to get around.

You can find almost everything you need in Kisumu including a variety of local and international cuisine,

A group of Luo women in a line before the camera, with a large number also gathered as a crowd behind them. They are wearingmerous body ornaments, such as metal leg rings, anklets and armlets (minyonge), beadnecklaces (tik ng'ut), waist beads (tik nungo)and cowrie shell (gaagi) necklaces. They also wear different kinds of aprons (olemo). Onewoman (3rd from right) seems to have an ostrich egg shell waist bead (rek). Small woven baskets for daily use are carried together with walking sticks and the hair styles also vary. The Kenyan Music "Mapepo" by Visita

The Kenyan music industry has really taken a great leap, it has really improved, from the low quality videos to HD and sensible, genres at least you can relax and listen to the music. The hip hop, Afro pop  has really changed in this part of southern Sahara.
To be frank I enjoy music a lot and I know a hit when I listen to one such music. I must admit that there are some artists still struggling to find their niche signatures. But the likes of KaKa Sungura(Rabbit ) and Visita Seem to be having fun when doing their thing. I am an ardent fun of East African Music from Kigali’s King James, Knowless , Uganda’s Chameleon, Maurice Kirya , Tanzania’s Alikiba ,Lady Jdee amongst others , Coming to 254 . Allow me to be biased today on one artist, he  leaves
me in stiches whenever  I do listen to his songs.
The song’s title is Mapepo" by Visita , His single  produced by Grandpa records released in late 2014 , it is  a hilarious one, high definition and portrayed high level of professionalism and on point on societal issues . The lyrics mostly talks about marriage, women’s role in a marriage, and the bad spirits (mapepo) affecting the young Generation and even older ones
